WHAT IS THE VEHICLE RADIATOR?
The radiator refers to the heat exchanger installed in the front grill area of your vehicle to provide proper cooling. Your vehicles radiator has pipes that circulate the coolant through it. The radiators pipes have fins that pull the heat out of the pipes that are circulating your engine coolant and further cool it. This cooling is assisted by coolant pushed or pulled by a fan through the radiator fins that basically provides more surface area to chill the coolant. Below is a cut away of a radiator to give you a picture of how the fins, pipes and flow of your radiator operate (Fig A.). The picture next to this shows a radiator that is clogged internally, thus limiting flow and causing an overheating concern (Fig B.)
HOW DOES A COOLING SYSTEM WORK?
Normal temperature coolant is pushed from the radiator to the engine by a pump.
The coolant absorbs the heat produced by the engine, leaving the engine relatively cool. An engine generates a lot of heat as it runs.
The pumping system pushes the hot coolant back into the radiator, where it circulates through the series of pipes.
The heat is dissipated into the surrounding air, allowing the temperature of the coolant to fall.
The step is repeated until the engine stops running.

WHAT IS RADIATOR FAILURE?
Typically, if your vehicle is taken to a reputable repair shop they should catch any radiator problems before they become an issue or leave you stranded. Most commonly, our technicians find radiator seals failing in the upper or lower tanks of radiators equipped with plastic tanks. These seals are a normal part of the wear process in a radiator. The plastic radiator tanks crack from heat and age, as well. If we see engine coolant leaking from your radiator its time to replace or repair it! Otherwise you may be stuck on the side of the road with an overheating vehicle in short order. If you find that your car is experiencing overheating problems, it is important that you get to the bottom of this matter as overheating can cause engine damage!
