What is the noise on my Tesla "Front-End Squeak"

Why Does My Tesla Sound Like an Old Rocking Chair Squeak? Let’s Talk About the Upper Control Arms

Tesla Squeak Upper Control Arm

If you drive a Tesla Model 3 or Model Y, you might have noticed a mysterious, high-pitched squeak or creak when driving over speed bumps, entering driveways, or pulling into parking spaces. It starts out faint, but before long, your cutting-edge electric vehicle sounds more like an old rocking chair.

At our auto repair shops, we see this constantly. While Teslas don't have engines, they still have traditional mechanical parts that take a beating from daily driving. The most common culprit behind that frustrating noise is the upper control arm ball joint. We have been changing a bunch of these suspension items recently.

Why the Tesla Squeak Happens in the Model 3 & Model Y

Tesla's factory upper control arms are designed with an integrated ball joint protected by a rubber boot. Because EVs are incredibly quiet, you notice noises much sooner than you would in a loud gas car.

Over time, road grit, water, and heat break down the internal lubrication inside that boot. Once the grease is gone, it’s raw metal rubbing against metal, which creates that classic, dry squeaking sound.

Why Getting It Fixed Matters

Beyond being an annoying sound, a dry or worn ball joint can eventually develop play (looseness). If left unaddressed, it degrades your steering precision, accelerates uneven tire wear, and can ultimately become a safety hazard if the joint fails.
